Hello Anthony! Tell me a bit about yourself. Where did you grow up?

Canberra, Australia

Did you play sports as a kid?

I played Field Hockey, Rugby Union, and Australian Rules Football.

Where do you live now?

Melbourne, Australia

How long have you been a photographer? When did you start?

I started out with a film camera in the mid 80’s, but with a Canon 70D in 2010.

What was your first “pro” camera?

Canon 7D due to my interests in Sport. The dual processors were great at the time.

What camera(s) do you currently shoot with?

Canon R5.

What was your first paid photography gig?

It was a local CrossFit competition. I think I did it for rock bottom. I had no idea what to charge.

That is very common! What was one of your favorite events/competitions/games/matches that you shot?

The Down Under Championships. I just find it cool to photograph the Elite sports people.

I agree- watching them perform at their best, at the highest ability, is so cool. They all move so well, it's beautiful to watch!

Do you do your own photo editing?

Yes

Do you like photo editing? Why or why not?

I do enjoy it but it takes a long time, in my opinion. I think I may be a perfectionist, and nothing gets provided straight from camera. After all, it's my brand associated with the shot. I know I take way more photos than I need but a want to make sure that I get the “Money Shot” and as CrossFit is a fast dynamic sport I will take a burst of shots most time to catch the right moment.

What photography jobs do you have coming up and you are excited about?

I like to travel. My wife is a Masters Athlete, she is currently doing well in the age group qualifiers. Whilst I wouldn’t be on team, if she punches a ticket to Birmingham, AL, I will take my cameras and hopefully get some cool shots. Otherwise, I do a lot of work with the International Functional Fitness Federation, and I am looking forward to their “Super Worlds” in Hungary this year.

Good luck to your wife!! What kinds of non-sports-related photo jobs do you take?

I don’t…… I have tried my hand at weddings, etc. And it’s not my jam.

Gotcha. Who were/are your mentors?

I have not had a formal Mentor as such, but people who give me inspiration in sport are [Nerijus "Nero" Dusevicius of] rxdphotography (got to work with him in Italy), Ross Forte, Ruby Wolff and Dylan Shoemaker (the fittest photographer).

I love Nero, Ross and Ruby! All of those three guys are solid humans, some of my favorite people on the entire planet. I have worked with all three over the years while working at the CrossFit Games as a photo editor. They are the cream of the crop, in my opinion. Love those dudes.

What would be an event/competition/game that you would love to shoot someday?

The [CrossFit] Games but I am not sure about the conditions around the use of your own photos. Otherwise, I would really love to photograph for iF3 at the Olympics if they ever get the sport to the Olympics.

What sport have you not shot yet that you would love to shoot?

Car racing. So many different techniques come into play.

Thank you very much, Anthony! Readers, find his work online on instagram and Facebook. See you all again on the blog next Thursday!
